Guiding changes volunteers’ lives!

As a volunteer you will get a great sense of satisfaction from watching the girls and young women in your unit develop their confidence and skills, as well as have lots of fun. In addition, working to improve your community both directly with the girls and possibly outside the unit on community projects will give you a huge sense of personal achievement.

As a volunteer you’ll also gain from the experience by making new friends and learning new skills such as leadership and organisational abilities that you can use at work or put on a CV.

There are various ways in which you can volunteer or become involved with Girlguding as an adult:-

  • Unit Leader     They help to run the group of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers (the unit) and take part in a training scheme in order to help them do this.  They wear uniform, hold a first aid certificate and are part of the district team.
  • Unit Helper    They also help with the unit but on a more informal basis, don’t need to take part in the training scheme or wear uniform.  They can be a valuble help to the unit leader even if they can only help occassionally.
  • Commissioner/Adviser  are adults who look after the other adults, offering help and support and advice on all kinds of subjects from the out of doors, to international to safe from harm.
  • Friends of Guiding are a group of interested people, usually parents of the girls involved, who meet occasionally and support the local units, often with fundraising.
  • The Trefoil Guild is open to any adult over 18 who has made the Promise in the past, or who is willing to do so or supports the aims and ethos of Girlguiding.  They follow their own programme of meetings and activities, and have an informal uniform and a red trefoil Promise badge.  There are two Trefoil Guilds in Angus, Carnoustie and Sidlaw.  For more information please contact our county chairman, Margaret McKinlay on 01241 852002.
