Who can join Girlguiding UK?
Any girl over 5 (4 in Northern Ireland), provided she is able to understand and make the guide promise. They join Rainbows at 5, Brownies at 7 and Guides at 10.

To join Guides do girls have to be in Brownies first?
No

Do girls have to wear uniform?
Girlguiding UK is a uniformed organisation, and girls wear uniform to meetings and on formal occasions. However the uniform is very varied and relaxed.

Is Girlguiding UK a Christian organisation?
No. Girls of any faith can belong to Girlguiding UK.

How much does it cost?
Girls pay a subscription, which may be collected weekly or monthly or termly. It covers things like hall rent, equipment, badges and craft materials. The actual amount varies from unit to unit due to the variations in rent costs and types of activities. It may include the annual subscription payable by all members every year or this may be collected separately. The annual subscription is paid every year in February, and it funds the county and Scottish guiding and Girlguiding UK. In 2009 it will be £23.50. In addition there may be costs for trips, holidays, camps and special events.

Where can we buy uniform?

The best place to buy any Guiding resources, including uniform is the Guide shop in Dundee – see seperate page.  There is also a Guide shop in Aberdeen, in St. Swithin Street.  Buying from the official shops mean that Girlguiding benefits, which in turn benefits the girls.  Please encourage your daughter to wear her uniform at all meetings, events and trips (unless advised otherwise).

Do the leaders get paid?

No.  Girlguiding is a voluntary organisation, and the adult leaders are volunteers, giving their time and talents freely to run their units.  The leaders believe that the girls benefit from the guiding programme, that promotes self-esteem and a community spirit, and are happy to give their time.  However they do look for and appreciate support from parents and can sometimes do with a little practical help – why not offer a little time too?  All the volunteer leaders go through a training scheme which includes first aid and safe from harm.
